La Grande Metairie - l’Etang de Kerloquet - Lake

l’Etang de Kerloquet is a public lake and is therefore controlled by the regional carte de Peche, region 56 – Morbihan. A day or week ticket can be purchased either online or in the shop onsite according to their website (although reception seemed to have no idea about this so I booked online using the PC in reception which has a webcam). Be aware that if booking online you will need to register and upload a photo as well as print off the ticket; which can be quite difficult when on holiday. A day ticket is 10 Euros at the time of writing (09/2016) or 32 Euros for a week. The ticket does allow you to fish any public venue in the region.

Whilst the website says the lake is 200 yards away, it is but to access it you have to go back through the campsite entrance road and walk down the main road to it. It took me 12 minutes to walk to the Dam end from near toilet block 3 (furthest away). There is good parking though either side of the bridge.

Before visiting here I had found a facebook page Sauvons l'étang de kerloquet and also pictures of dead carp so I was not expecting much. When I arrived at the lake it was very clear that the water level was down by about 2m, there were dried out lily's and the rushes were several meters from the waters edge. The exposed bedrock looked to be volcanic and I would describe fishing here like fishing on Mars!

I used my depth finder and the deepest area was near the dam wall at just 1.2m, the depth decreased gradually in all directions away from the dam wall.

I decided to target the Carp with small areas of bait with high attraction. I opted for a stringer of 5 boilies which was smothered with flavouring before being cast out to the deeper water near the dam. Each hookbait was a snowman with a different coloured hi-viz popup. I managed 3 carp to 12lb.

Early morning there were lots of predators striking at small fish but I would say that they were small pike.

A local angler pitched up on the opposite bank and fished maggot on the waggler. He balled it with 10 or so good sized balls of ground bait about 3 rod lengths out and sprayed it with maggots. He caught silver fish ranging from 1oz to 14oz all morning and when he pulled in his keep net at lunchtime I would say he had about 10lb; they looked like roach and bream. On occasions it went quiet for him and a few small fish would jump out the water suggesting a pike had moved in. He and I lure fished on a number of occasions throughout the day but with no success; a small live bait may give a better result given the abundance of bait fish.

Despite the obvious problems the lake is having with the lack of water from the feeder stream; there is still good fishing to be had on the lake.
