York Rowntree Park Caravan Club Site - River Yorkshire Ouse

In the centre of York City this campsite offers excellent access to the Yorkshire Ouse just outside the entrance to the campsite.

The fishing rights are owned by York City Council and it is Free to fish, as long as you have your EA rod licence. Useful information about general course fishing can be found here

As with all rivers, it is best fished when conditions are right (level, temperature, water clarity) however you can't always fish when conditions are right and when on holiday with limited fishing time you have to take what you have. For me the River was high and chocolate brown with water temperatures down to 4C (Feb 2017).

Targeting Pike, I opted to rove with lures for an hour on the first evening just to locate suitable areas to fish with deadbaits the following afternoon. No sign of Pike on the lures but I did earmark a few slacks to try with deadbaits the following day after a day in the city sightseeing with the family.

The River had dropped and the colour had improved by the next afternoon so I dropped into the slacks I had looked at the previous day, sure enough after 45 minutes in the first spot I had a slow finicky take on float fished Mackerel. After a short fight a pike of 5-6lb graced my net. no more takes for the last couple of hours before darkness however there were some nice looking spots within easy reach of the campsite.

The river is a prolific roach/bream/chub/barbel river with some big Carp and Pike to specimen sizes present - in the right conditions of course!
